The Arab league, Russia and Turkey are putting pressure on president Bashar al-Assad of Syria to step down. This was caused by the death of more than 71 people on Monday who had clashed with government forces of Syria . This makes the death rate of Syrians since the uprising started in march 3,500 . Turkey, once a close ally of Syria says that plans to look for oil deposits in Syria has been canceled. If things go on as they are, they might also stop their electric services in Syria. 1,180 prisoners who have been arrested in Syria were released a few hours before the calling of president Bashar al-Assad to step down. they were people who were "involved in recent events" and had not committed murder. one of the people freed was lawyer kamal Labwani who was about to get a 15 year sentence for a insulting President al-Assad.

The significance of this event is that it is a huge step toward putting Syrias regime out of power. This might be an end to the death of civilians and soldiers fighting for what they believe in and a free government. this decision made by these countries will make Syrian leaders act more justly. this event stopped Turkeys plans to look for oil deposits in syria. it could lessen Syrias source of electricity. source of current event: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/04/world/africa/libya-leaders-promise-new-government-after-qaddafi-hometown-captured.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=libya%20leaders%20promise%20new%20government%20after%20qaddafi%20hometown%20is%20captured%20&st=cse

Qaddafi is still not found in Libya and opposition forces are looking for him. Libya's provisional leaders said that they would resign once armed Qaddafi supporters in Surt have been defeated. militants from the Nafusah mountains are one of the many militants patrolling the streets of Tripoli and causing causing conflict between different parties. This has caused the cities residents to be frightened. the temporary prime minister of Libya, mahmoud Jibril announced that within a month of capturing Surt, a new interim government would be named.

The significance of this event is that Libya is getting closer to getting a just democratic government in which they have a say about things. After the rebels have taken Surt, they will be able to get what they are fighting for. it will end the fighting for the most part and it will allow the people of Libya to have a chance of getting a better life based on the decisions they make through the new government. Most Lydians would react happily to this.

the enlightenment thinker Voltaire would agree with this because he believes that people are born with the rights of liberty, freedom and persuit of happines and this will allow them to achieve it. Voltaire would view and support the situation because people are fighting for their rights and the chance to persue a happy life. For example, if the rebels can win over Surt, the current remaining members of the government would step down and there would be an election.
